Rehan Siddiqi presented, a once in a life time theatrical experience, FullSizeRender (4)three consecutive days’ in a row – 14th and 15th in Houston, followed by 16th April in San Antonio. All three shows were hugely successful with record crowds for the venues. Houston, had the opportunity to witness this epic saga and all those theater aficionados were bestowed with this sophisticated, literary performance. The evening brought with it mystic poetry, filled with romance from the yester years, humour, some genuinely funny, some evocative of the era, brimming with grief and interwoven with ghazals that were complemented with sounds of violin’s and tabla’s – KAIFI AUR MEIN made sure that it covered all these elements, set in the midst of political and rebellious pre-independent India.

Kaifi aur Mein, is a celebration of a renowned Urdu poet and Bollywood film lyricist Kaifi Azmi’s life and works, seen through the eyes of his wife, a noted theater and film actress Shaukat Kaifi & brought to life by his world renowned daughter, actor, Shabana Azmi along with noted and eminent poet Javed Akthar. It is a compilation of Shaukat’s interaction with Kaifi, summarizing their 55-year-old real life romance, right from the time she met him as a young girl till their last day together.

Calling Shabana Azmi one of the finest actresses we have, is an understatement. Houston saw her demonstrate her brilliance alongside the renowned poet Javed Akhtar, living out the letters and anecdotes of the legendary Kaifi Azmi. Shabana, enacting the saga of her parents delivered a performance, loaded with simplicity. She made it look effortless when revealing, Shaukat’s innermost feelings and Kaifi’s thoughts. The performance was directed and streered, by the expert Ramesh Talwar himself. The theatrical experience came to an end with Javed Akthar’s, famous poetic tribute to Kaifi Azmi “ajeeb aadmi tha woh, mohabbaton ka geet thaa, baghabaton ka raag thaa, kabhi woh srif phool thaa, kabhi woh sirf aag thaa”.

The venue added a subtlety required for this performance and the backdrop added to the ambience with a pondering sketch of Kaifi right at the center and poetry scrolls on either side. Jaswinder Singh and troupe enhanced the experience, giving a musical break to the saga, while presenting the compositions of Kaifi sab’s poetry from several Bollywood movies, transporting the audience back in time. For every mood and for every situation, there was a Kaifi song that was intermingled and that’s what made it a delightful experience.

Rehan Siddiqi, the leader of the team behind this amazing production, left no stone unturned to ensure that this event received the same appreciation and accolades like his previous 300 shows. The high expectation of “Rehan Siddiqi Productions” was continual, from production to hospitality. The event was top-notch and hugely successful.

Priyanka Chopra Says India is a ‘Difficult’ Country

priyanka-chopra_640x480_41467785761Actress Priyanka Chopra, who has made a name for herself in international showbiz, says India is a difficult country and it will take time for things to change as far as the mindset towards women is concerned as well as in terms of the difference between the rich and poor.

“India is a difficult country. It is like one whole world wherein each state has different traits, different culture, different language, different writing, different thought process and different religion. It (change in mindset for women) is not going to be changed tomorrow,” Priyanka said here on Tuesday.

The actress shared her views about the stereotypes that women are subjected to when she became a part of an event here.

Priyanka, as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador launched a ‘Fair Start’ campaign, here on Tuesday. The session touched upon various issues like the gap between rich and poor, stereotypes that women face and how can more opportunities be created so that everyone in the country gets a fair chance to prove their potential.

“We have forgotten humanity in this disparity. And we can overcome it by creating opportunity to include them (less privileged) in your life. Slowly you will make a difference. Opportunities should be created by the government, which they are, but government cannot change mindset. Change will come from within us,” said the National Award winning actress.

Asked to comment on how Indian women are still struggling to get their rights, she said: “Since the time I remember, and it is not our country’s fault, the whole world treats women as second fiddle. It will take some time to change that. And the change can only come when all the girls will stand united and ask for their right.”

The 33-year-old actress shared that the most important thing to do right now is that all the “mothers should teach their sons to respect women”.

The actress even urged the people of the country to give opportunities to girls so they can show their caliber.

A bunch of grapes has sold for a record-breaking $11,000 (£8,500) in Japan, where fruit often commands high prices and social prestige. A supermarket owner from western Japan walked away with 30 grapes, each worth about $360.

They were the first Ruby Romans – a super sweet grape variety grown in Ishikawa prefecture – of the season.
“We will display them at our store before giving our customers a sample taste,” Takamaru Konishi said.

The Japanese are often willing to pay top-dollar for premium samples of fruit, sometimes with the intention of giving them as gifts to people perceived to be of higher status – for example, their boss at work.

A single apple can cost up to $3. And melons are sometimes sold for the equivalent price of a vintage wine.

Last year a pair of melons sold under the hammer for more than $12,000.

“I am so happy and I am honoured,” Mr Konishi said.

Pop icon Cher aims to free lonely elephant in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The plight of a lonely elephant in a Pakistani zoo has inspired help from pop icon Cher, who has sent a representative to oversee improvements in his living conditions.

Cher first became aware of 29-year-old Kavaan’s plight when pictures of the elephant in chains with only a dilapidated shed for shelter and a small, dirty pond to play in spread on social media.

Cher sent her representative, Mark Cowne, to Islamabad to check up on Kavaan, who has been kept chained for 27 of his 29 years at the Maraghazar Zoo in Islamabad.
“Mark got Kaavan Water, Shade & Unchained. MARK IS TRYING EVERYTHING TO FREE HIM,” Cher tweeted after Cowne visited the zoo.
Cher would soon launch an international campaign to help elephants in captivity.

Kavaan’s caretakers last week said they had never heard of Cher or her music but were grateful for her help.

“We hope this will change things for him,” said Kavaan’s caretaker, Muhammad Jalal, as another caretaker sprayed the animal with a high-pressure hose while he bathed in a pond of muddy water.

Zoo management did not respond to calls seeking comment but told reporters last month that they were trying to get a new mate for Kavaan from Sri Lanka.
Kavaan was given to Pakistan by Sri Lanka in the 1980s. His only companion died in 2012.
